Peter Hobson passed away on February 17, 2003. The following is a copy of his obituary from the Ottawa Citizen:
"HOBSON, John Peter Passed away at his home on February 17, 2003 at the age of 78 years. Peter is the loving husband of Isabel, beloved father of Daniel (Jane) of Delta, B.C., Eric (Diane) of Calgary, Alberta, James (Anne) of Ottawa, Ont., and Alan (Cecilia) of Canmore, Alta. Cherished grandpa of Michael and Taryn of Delta, BC, Laura and Shannon of Calgary, Alta. and David and Sarah of Ottawa, Ont. He is also survived by his brother Winslowe of Smithers, BC. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 McLeod Street on Saturday, February 22 from 10 a.m. until the time of the service in the Chapel at 11 a.m. If friends so desire memorial tributes may be made to the charity of their choice."
Peter Hobson was a founding member of the Division of Surface Science Executive in 1979. He served as vice-Chair on the first Executive and participated in the discussions with the CAP and CIC on the formation of the Division. He regularly attended Surface Canada conferences since their inception in 1967. The Division's primary student award, given at the Surface Canada conferences to the best student presentation, is named "The Hobson Prize" in his honor.
